Legal Staff
Arthur Rieman, J.D, M.B.A.
Arthur Rieman is the firm's managing director. He has been practicing
law since 1988 (J.D. UCLA ‘88) and is a member of the State Bar of
California. He was worked with nonprofits since high school and has done
legal work for nonprofits since his first year in law school. In 1996 he
became the principal of Nonprofit Incorporators, a law firm that served
the formation and related needs of public charities, private foundations
and other tax exempt organizations. Since then,
the firm has grown to serve the broad range of legal needs of nonprofits
nationwide, with a focus on issues surrounding the laws that regulate
nonprofits. It changed its name to The Law Firm for Non-Profits in order
to reflect its broadened focus.
His prior legal experience has been as a corporate lawyer with
larger, multi-national firms, an employment and civil rights litigator
with a boutique firm, and as general counsel for the original
infomercial company (where he led a team of attorneys in defending a
multi-district class action). He also holds an MBA from UCLA’s Anderson
School (‘79) and spent six years launching start-up telecommunications
companies. Mr. Rieman also consults nonprofits on strategic issues as a
co-founder The Cultural+Planning Group, a consulting firm to nonprofits
and governmental agencies, He frequently speaks and
writes on topics of interest related to the
law and operations of nonprofits organizations.
Beth Bergman, J.D.
Beth Bergman is Of Counsel to The Law Firm for Non-Profits. A Phi Beta
Kappa graduate of Brown University and of Harvard Law School, Beth's
handles many of our client's needs in the areas of affordable housing,
tax-exempt financing, community development and real estate issues. She
has worked in both the private and public sectors, including with
administrations of Los Angeles mayors Tom Bradley and Richard Riordan,
where among other accomplishments she facilitated real estate loans
between the City and nonprofit institutions follow the 1994 Northridge
earthquake utilizing tax credits, bonds and City subsidies.
Beth is licensed to practice law in California, D.C., is a member of
the National Association of Bond Lawyers, has served as associate editor
for the ABA Affordable Housing and Community Redevelopment Journal, and
has taught Constitutional Law at Loyola Law School and Environmental Law
at Glendale School of Law.
David Plettner, J.D.
David Plettner was the first staff person hired by The Law Firm for
Non-Profits (then Nonprofit Incorporators). His specialty with the firm
has long been writing exemption applications for new nonprofits. He
holds a law degree from the University of North Carolina. Mr. Plettner
is a co-founder of The
Cultural+Planning Group, a consulting firm to nonprofits
specializing in business planning, cultural planning and organizational
development for nonprofits.
